The Mission of the Paynesville Historical Society shall be the discovery, preservation and dissemination
of artifacts and historical material which are specific to the community of Paynesville and its
surrounding area.
Recognizing that for the Paynesville Historical Society (PHS) to go on into infinity, younger generations
need to experience all that it has to offer. Currently, the museum on the grounds includes a timeline of historical information, both in Paynesville and worldwide. Also, visitors can walk through a village of businesses from over a hundred years ago. Ebenezer Church and Brown School are additional buildings on the property and can be toured. The Board of Directors has determined that one way to reach younger people is to provide a full day
Kids History Camp on June 10th , July 15th, and August 12th. The mission of the camp is to connect youth with pioneer life and Minnesota heritage and help them understand how the past affects our lives today. Each camp will have a limit of 50 kids and an anticipated 40 volunteers.
Cost of the camp is $25 per child per day with a family limit of $100. Also, part of the budget is to provide funding for scholarships for under-resourced families.
Goals, Action Steps and Outcomes
Planned population to be served
1. All families in Paynesville area and neighboring communities.
Camp is offered to kids ages 6 to 15.
2. Volunteers of all ages and locations will be welcomed.
Planned Number to Serve
1. Campers – 50 x 3 = 150
2. Volunteers – 40 x 3 = 120
3. Paid staff – 10 x 3 = 30
4. Total = 300
Located on the grounds of the museum and on a nearby farm, kids from ages 6 to 15 will participate in six stations, each focused on a different topic of living in the late 1800s to early 1900s.
Home Life station will be on the museum grounds and include activities that children from the time were required to do.
School Life station will be held in the Brown School, the only remaining schoolhouse in Stearns County.
Crafts and Games station will also be hosted on the museum grounds, including a possible scavenger hunt through the museum.
At the farm location, Animal Care station will educate about care of horses, chickens and more.
Outdoor Skills station, located just across the road from the farm, will focus on how to start a fire without a match and other survival skills.
And Minnesota/Native American History station will be located in a wooded area near the farm. The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe will provide insight in Native American culture and activities.
Kids History Camp will be a multi-generational activity, bringing kids and adults together through learning activities.
The cost of putting on a camp is expensive, and the Board of Directors(BOA)/Kids History Camp Committee is working diligently toward an ambitious fundraising goal of $28,000.
Community needs and impact. Opportunities include reaching a new generation and teaching them about Paynesville area and Minnesota history. The camp will expose kids to a life before computers, automobiles, TVs or telephones. This is a multigenerational event that will connect experiences from each group.
Challenges – Bringing multigenerational groups together and develop new connections.
Issues – The historical society is a nonprofit organization and to host a professional event takes resources. We want to keep the cost affordable to families. The Board of Directors is mindful that to sustain the Paynesville Historical Society into the future, we need to reach younger families.
How and why – Paynesville has a deep, rich history that is preserved by the Paynesville Historical Society and we want to promote area pride through this event.
